2A - Bug List

Assignment 2A – Bug List

1.     Library West and Marston are always too crowded and you waste time looking for an open seat.
a.     WHY does it exist: These are the two most popular libraries on campus. With the sheer volume of students on campus, it is inevitable that these two main libraries will be crowded, especially during exam season.
2.     When Starbucks forgets your order.
a.     WHY does it exist: The workers are human and if they forget to put your name and drink on a cup right when you order it they will forget about it.
3.     Not being able to park at the O’Connell Center for athletic team practice four days a week because of time restrictions.
a.     WHY does it exist: Parking restrictions are due to limited space on campus and to prevent just anyone from being able to park there and take up spots that are for workers.
4.     When the UF gyms are so crowded that no machines are available or there is no space to do your own workout.
a.     WHY does it exist: There are only two gyms on campus for students and one of them is extremely small so it is inevitable that they will be crowded, especially at peak times.
5.     5:00 traffic on Archer Road.
a.     WHY does it exist: This is a very popular road for people driving home from work or school. There are also a plethora of fast food options and convenient places to stop like Publix and Target.
6.     Not being able to use the UF Athlete Gym or athlete tutoring services even though I am a member of a team under the UAA.
a.     WHY does it exist: Dazzlers don’t get the same privileges or are treated the same as other athletes under the UAA.
7.     Toilets not flushing in the Library West bathrooms.
a.     WHY does it exist: Probably because of the sheer number of people that use it on a daily basis and not enough maintenance.
8.     When your shirts ride up and leggings fall down when working out.
a.     WHY does it exist: Everyone’s bodies are different so it is almost impossible to make clothing that will fit everyone just right.
9.     When students cross the road without looking first to see if a car is coming, or crossing somewhere without a crosswalk.
a.     WHY does it exist: Students are used to drivers on campus being extra cautious and take it for granted that they will stop.
10.   When people are on their phones when they shouldn’t be: crossing the road, with friends, in class, etc.
a.     WHY does it exist: Cell phones use has become an addiction, especially for young people these days and especially with the rise of social media.
11.  When your computer makes a loud breathing noise when you’re doing too many things on it at once.
a.     WHY does it exist: A computer can only handle so much at one time, especially if it is old.
12.  When lectures in the business school are so crowded that you have to sit on the floor and can barely see the professor.
a.     WHY does it exist: The business school at UF is set up to record lectures and post them online because of the sheer number of students outnumbering how many a classroom can hold. The first couple weeks of class is when the most number of people actually show up, so there aren’t enough seats and people have to sit on the floor.
13.  It’s hard to know for sure what exactly is in the food that we buy, how it’s made, how the animals are treated, and how all the added ingredients will affect us.
a.     WHY does it exist: Companies don’t readily make this information available to the public because oftentimes they don’t want the public to know. This is why organic options are available, so the consumer knows that no pesticides, genetic modification, or other harmful practices were used.
14.  When restaurants in Gainesville are ridiculously crowded after games and there is an hour long wait.
a.     WHY does it exist: Everyone is leaving the games at the same time and going to the same popular restaurants in Gainesville. It is hard for restaurants to be able to accommodate that many people at once.
15.  Social media has taken over our lives and become an addiction.
a.     WHY does it exist: Social media is designed to addict you and keep you constantly scrolling. It has become a staple in our lives and a way to interact with other people. It is hard to find a balance between using social media and abstaining.
16.  EMF radiation from our phones and technology and the harmful effects that could result.
a.     WHY does it exist: Cellphone companies don’t readily announce the harmful effects of their products since it would deter some people from buying them. They only include warnings in the fine-print, like to keep your cellphone at least 6 inches from your body at all times. Most people don’t know the harmful effects that radiation from our cellphones could have.
17.  We aren’t getting a traditional classroom/college experience with all of the business school classes being online.
a.     WHY does it exist: Classrooms in the Heavener Business School are too small to fit the class sizes of up to 1000 students. Therefore, classes are not required attendance because the lectures are recorded and posted online.
18.  The coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts tastes more like milk than coffee.
a.     WHY does it exist: They probably use cheap coffee and milk to keep prices down.
19.  The set-up of the Alachua County Humane Society is not conducive to people actually wanting to adopt the animals. They seem rowdy and aggressive only because of the situation they are in and the fact that they are constantly surrounded by other dogs.
a.     WHY does it exist: Humane societies have limited money to work with so they have to put the dogs all in the same room together.
20.  Oftentimes the packages I order online to my apartment get lost.
a.     WHY does it exist: Delivery services are bound to make mistakes. My apartment is hard to find and distinguish between the one next to it that looks identical.

Reflection:
Just as Dr. Pryor warned us before beginning the assignment, I was able to come up with about five different “bugs” before my ideas came to a screeching halt. The next day, I came up with five more. The remaining ten “bugs” turned out to be a real challenge. I actually wasn’t expecting it to be as hard as it was even though I was warned. Throughout the process I learned a couple of important things, the first being that I need to pay more attention to the world around me. There are opportunities everywhere and I realized that I often overlook them. The second is that I live a very fortunate and blessed lifestyle in which not too many things bother me to the extent of extreme discomfort. The fact that I could easily only come up with about 8-10 “bugs” means that I live a life and in a society that for the most part meets my most pressing needs.

  1. I think you did a great job and figuring out more bugs. My favorites were 9 and 10 because they're similar but different both involving cellphone use at the wrong time and place to use it. Its hard to realize how many little things can be bothersome when you may forget within the next hour. Its a nice feeling to realize that not having so many bothers is a blessing you never noticed before.

  2. Hey Hope, I really like some of the points you made in your post like EMF radiation, how social media has taken over our lives (that made my list as well) and how students carelessly cross the street without looking both ways. I also found it difficult to come up with ‘bugs’ towards the end of my list. It is also nice to see you reflect on how your life may be blessed in certain aspects when looking at these ‘bugs.’
